When Your Car is Repossessed
Written by Sharon K. Campbell
  1. Get your property back.
  2. Be careful what you sign.

Contact the repossession agent to recover any personal items which were left in your vehicle.

Sometimes repo companies charge you for retrieving your property. This is illegal but you may have to pay to get your stuff and consider legal options later.

Make sure the lending institution or company financing your purchase, who had your car repossessed, has your current address.

The finance company is required to send a notice to you telling you they have repossessed your vehicle and informing you of what they intend to do with the vehicle.

If you negotiate or meet with anyone after your car is repossessed or even just to pick up your property, be very careful what you sign.

Sometimes finance companies will try to get you to sign a release of all liability in order for you to retrieve your possessions. This is illegal. They have no right to keep your personal possessions.

Sometimes they will present you with a document which states you are agreeing to let them keep your vehicle in satisfaction of the debt.

BE CAREFUL AND READ ANY DOCUMENT PUT BEFORE YOU TO SIGN.
